The Nation

The Over-Hill Indian Nation of Cherokee Descendants was created and organized in 1990 by Dr. Lee Roy Gibson, Ph.D.

Dr. Gibson carried the title of Principle Chief Man Many Trees for 32 years; handing the mantle down to Floyd Hooks of the Long Hair Clan.

The Nation is the result of a seven-day vision quest taken by Man Many Trees in 1978.

Our Mission

The mission of the Over-Hill Indian Nation as described by Dr. Gibson is:

1. TO BRING TOGETHER THOSE WHO WANT TO LEARN AND PRACTICE THE OVER-HILL CHEROKEE HISTORY, CULTURE AND TRADITIONS

2. TO UNITE THE DESCENDANTS OF THE OVER-HILL CHEROKEES, WHO BY ORAL OR WRITTEN FAMILY DOCUMENTATION, ARE DESCENDANTS OF THE OVER HILL CHEROKEE ANSCESTORS

* NOTE: THE NATION DOES NOT SEEK FEDERAL OR STATE RECOGNITION

OUR HISTORY

THE HISTORY AND TRADITIONS TAUGHT BY THE OVER-HILL INDIAN NATION DESCENDANTS ARE AS RECORDED BY THE "DESCENDANTS" FOUNDING FATHER, MAN MANY TREES, WHO SERVED AS FOUNDER AND PRINCIPLE CHIEF FOR 32 YEARS .  MAN MANY TREES DOES NOT "CLAIM TO BE THE FINAL WORD ON ANY CHEROKEE TRADITIONS OR CULTURE OF OUR CHEROKEE ANSCESTORS." THE TEACHINGS ARE FROM FAMILY TRADITIONS, LOCAL TRADITIONS AND OLD STORIES PASSED ALONG THE TENNESSEE MOUNTAINS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at OHCD2023@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

No, the Over-Hill Indian Nation of Cherokee Descendants is not affiliated with any other Cherokee Nation; i.e The Eastern Band and/or the Western Band.

The Nation does not offer membership based on genetic make-up.  All you need is a documented or oral history placing you as a descendant. ( Keep in mind that adoptions were common and mixed marriages were how we escaped the Forced Removal)

Donations are always welcome but no fee is required.  However, there is a fee for materials such as the Handbook, and Membership Cards.  These will be mailed to you at your expense or given to you at the Spring Gathering.
